Duty of CareIn order to ensure that CCTV systems are not only still required but are also operated in compliance with the Data Protection Act, we recommend that an audit of each CCTV system is carried out at least once a year. |
Are you fully confident that your CCTV system is DPA compliant? The Code of Practice is basically a checklist to make sure that all CCTV systems come up to a certain standard to ensure that the data - images - is not compromised. In these days of numerous reports of lost data, it is paramount to protect - and be seen to protect - people's data. In CCTV terms, the CCTV images that are captured by cameras and can identify individuals are individual's personal data just the same as their bank details of personnel records. Just some of the very basic issues........ Is the CCTV justified? Are you registered for your CCTV system and for the correct purposes? Are all your recorded images held securely and access to them restricted and monitored? Is the recording equipment kept in a restricted area and access logged? Is the system maintained and "fit for purpose"? Are those who deal with the CCTV system fully trained on the DPA? Are the cameras in the correct positions and not capturing areas outwith your premises? Do you have correctly worded and correctly sited signage? Are those who deal with CCTV aware of what to do when a request for data is made? Are there correct and full procedures to deal with requests from the public and law officers? Are public data access request forms and public awareness leaflets available? Are images kept for the correct period of time? Are correct procedures followed for evidence handover? Do you destroy the data in a correct and audited fashion?
These are just a small number of questions you need to ask yourself. Remove the doubt and contact us for a totally independent audit. |
